Write product titles for search and customers

Write product titles that identify the item and the attributes customers use to distinguish it. Keep unsupported claims and ambiguous model names out of the title. The search title and visible product identity should describe the same item even when their wording has different length constraints.

Identify the product and its defining attributes

Use the product name and a few supported distinguishing attributes to replace vague praise in titles. Verify material, capacity, dimensions and fit against the source record. The five revisions explain a customer choice; a search-preview mockup cannot promise which title wording or width Google will ultimately show.

Worked example — illustrative data.

Before Revision specimen Claim source needed
Best Premium Light Arc brass desk lamp, mains powered Model, finish and power record
Amazing Box Birch storage box, 30 × 20 × 15 cm Material and external dimensions
Perfect Travel Mug Insulated mug, 350 ml, navy Capacity and construction evidence
Pro Shirt Cotton shirt, relaxed fit, cream Fabric and approved fit description
Eco Super Bag Canvas tote, 38 cm wide Material/dimension; no unsupported environmental claim

Start with the catalog’s canonical product name and add only attributes that meaningfully identify this variant or fit. Put important distinguishing detail early without stacking every keyword variation. Check that the title remains readable in the actual page and a search-preview mockup. Keep preview length as a design review, not a guarantee of what a search engine will show. Trace size, capacity and material claims to approved product records.

Keep a short title from changing the product’s meaning

For the storage-box example, retain whether dimensions are external or usable internal measurements when shortening the title. Move supporting detail into a visible specification rather than replacing it with an ambiguous number. Compare the title, H1, selected variant and linked product record after the edit. A shorter title is only useful when it still identifies the right item.

A short dimension can imply the wrong measurement basis

A title can include a dimension that means external width while the customer assumes usable interior. Clarify the measurement in the page, and use a less ambiguous distinguishing attribute if the short title cannot explain it.

Choose the smallest factual title that identifies the right product. Treat all five rows as authored specimens until the corresponding source records are approved.

Will Google always show the title I write?

Google can generate a different title link from page and other signals. Keep titles descriptive and consistent with visible content, then inspect the actual result separately. A preview is a proposal, not a guarantee of the displayed search title.
