List preferred discoverable product URLs
A sitemap describes intended URLs; it is not a complete inventory of what search engines have indexed. It also does not replace the links a shopper uses to navigate the catalog. A useful catalog sitemap should agree with the site’s preferred URLs and avoid presenting retired or test pages as current destinations.
Illustrative store: /products/ceramic-cup/ appears in the sitemap, but the product template contains a noindex instruction copied from testing. The sitemap entry does not cancel that instruction. The team checks the live response and rendered page, confirms the publication decision, and removes the unintended restriction only after approval. A second listed URL redirects to a newer product and needs its sitemap entry updated.
Check why a listed page may still be excluded
An excluded URL can have several explanations, including indexing instructions, canonical selection, access problems or the search engine’s own processing decisions. This example identifies a conflict; it does not claim every sitemap exclusion has the same cause.
Next, sample listed products and compare the sitemap address, response, indexing instructions and declared canonical. Investigate exclusions individually before adding more URLs or assuming that submitting the file solved discovery.
