Product variant

A product variant is a particular combination of a product’s options, such as a size and color. A variant may have its own stock, image, price or identifier. The selected options must agree with the item the shopper adds to the cart.

Separate color and size combinations

A variant is more specific than the overall product, but it does not automatically need a separate search-indexed page. Product modeling and URL strategy are connected decisions. A color option, a new product model and a replacement accessory should not be treated as the same relationship merely because the store displays them near each other.

Illustrative shirt: blue/small has stock available, while blue/medium is unavailable. Selecting medium changes the stock message and disables the unavailable purchase choice; the blue photograph remains appropriate. A shared link opening white/small should select that combination and show its matching details. The buyer should not arrive on white/small, see blue stock information and add a different item without noticing.

Connect variant choices with inventory imagery and URLs

Options and URL behavior differ by platform and theme. A working selector does not establish that inventory updates, analytics and canonical signals are correct. Shopify’s variant guidance, for example, requires selected-variant information to update; it does not determine every store’s indexing policy.

Next, test one available combination, one unavailable combination and one shared variant link. Check the page, cart and inventory record together before deciding which variant URLs deserve independent discovery.
