Audit WooCommerce extensions before a rebuild

Audit WooCommerce extensions by the business task each one owns, its dependencies and how the team would recover if it fails. Counting plugins is not an assessment of risk. Start with the purchase-critical path and preserve the current implementation until a replacement is verified.

Record extension dependencies and rollback owners

Inventory the task, version, dependency, update owner and rollback route for every extension affecting checkout or order data. Check downstream responsibilities before removal, even when no storefront widget is visible. The four extension roles below need their own verified staging cases; plugin count alone does not determine operational risk.

Worked example — illustrative data.

Extension role Dependency to verify Owner and rollback
Payment gateway Checkout, webhook and order-state handling Payments owner; approved recovery route
Pickup rules Branch inventory and collection messages Operations owner; known working configuration
Product options Variant identity and cart pricing Catalog owner; export/config backup
Analytics connector Purchase/refund IDs and consent state Measurement owner; prior release reference

Record installed version, source, license responsibility, update owner and the task that would break if the extension were removed. Check provider maintenance and compatibility evidence for the actual environment. Draw dependencies where two extensions modify the same order state or checkout field. Stage changes one at a time with test products and approved sandbox credentials. Keep a dated known-working configuration and a verified restore route before proposing removal.

Find the extension that works only after the order

Walk an approved synthetic order through confirmation, fulfilment, refund and export responsibilities before calling an extension unused. Record scheduled tasks, webhooks and administrative-only functions as dependencies even if they add no visible storefront widget. Test a proposed replacement in staging and preserve the supported rollback route until the affected owner accepts it.

Invisible extensions may support refunds or exports

An extension that seems unused in the storefront can support refunds, accounting or scheduled exports. Ask the operational owner before treating the absence of a visible widget as proof it can be removed.

Replace or retire an extension only when its function and downstream dependencies are covered and rollback is concrete. Do not update the entire stack to make the inventory shorter.

Should old-looking extensions be removed automatically?

Use current compatibility, actual purpose, ownership and risk evidence to decide. Appearance or an absent storefront feature cannot show that an extension is unused. Resolve the dependency and recovery plan before an authorized removal.
