Test theme and custom proposals on the same tasks
Compare theme and custom proposals on the same difficult product, configuration path and weekly editing task. Require each to explain its dependencies and operating owner. Choose a custom storefront only when a demonstrated requirement justifies that responsibility; unusual styling by itself does not establish the need for a different architecture.
Worked example — illustrative data.
| Requirement | Theme proposal must demonstrate | Custom proposal must demonstrate |
|---|---|---|
| Variant-specific imagery | Correct image and cart selection | Same behavior plus data ownership |
| Special product configuration | Supported option path or explicit gap | Validated configuration and price logic |
| Weekly owner editing | Editor changes product and page safely | Usable editing and recovery workflow |
| Operating responsibility | Theme/app update owner | Build, integration and incident owners |
Use the same difficult product and editing task for both proposals. Identify where each solution uses native behavior, an app, custom work or a manual workaround. Ask for the smallest implementation that meets mandatory requirements. Compare the full operating responsibility, including product updates, accessibility, recovery and release work. Do not insert invented build prices or maintenance savings into the matrix; request project-specific scope and commercial terms after fit is understood.
A speculative future feature should not decide today’s build
A theme can meet today’s catalog but fail an approved near-term configurator requirement. Conversely, a speculative feature should not force a custom build if the business has not decided to offer it.
Choose the simpler maintainable option that demonstrates the real requirements. Hold the architecture decision when the owner task or a mandatory configuration path is still theoretical.
