Preserve useful product images in a migration

Preserve useful product images during a migration by mapping image identity, product relationships and rights as carefully as page URLs. A copied file is not enough if the new storefront shows the wrong finish or loses an important detail view. Validate the visible result as well as the asset transfer.

Match each image to its product and task

Map each image to the exact SKU or variant, its useful view, rights record and intended destination. Check that the visible storefront preserves detail and selection context after transfer. A successful file count cannot establish that the brass image stayed with brass or that a fit diagram remains readable.

Worked example — illustrative data.

Old asset New relationship Acceptance
arc-brass-front.jpg Arc brass gallery, main view Correct finish and crop
arc-cable-detail.jpg Arc product detail gallery Cable and switch remain visible
clamp-dimensions.svg Clamp fit information Readable dimensions and text alternative
old-bundle.jpg Review: accessories no longer included Do not carry misleading bundle image
supplier-url.jpg Rights/access not confirmed Hold until source is resolved

Record source URL, intended destination, exact SKU or variant, view purpose, rights owner and alt-text requirement. Keep original files and approved derivatives distinguishable. Check successful delivery, responsive image selection, orientation and product accuracy in staging. Where image URLs change, include them in the migration plan and confirm supported routing behavior. Preserve meaningful diagrams and support images even when they are not the largest marketing asset.

Reconcile one image through variant selection

Choose a product with two finishes and a close-up needed for fit. Trace each old asset to its destination, select both finishes on the new page and inspect the gallery on a phone. Record missing views, misleading bundles and unreadable dimension labels separately. Retain a rights exception even when the file copied successfully.

Decision: Accept the image transfer when each useful view has the right product relationship and remains readable on the buyer’s device. Hold images with unresolved rights or misleading contents.

Renamed images can attach to the wrong finish: A renamed image may accidentally be attached to every color variant. Compare the selected product state with the gallery after the import rather than relying on filenames or transfer counts alone.

Does transferring every image file finish image QA?

No. Check that the right view is attached to the right item and finish, that it remains useful at the displayed size and that its usage rights are confirmed. File counts cannot establish those relationships.
