Test promotion rules and their failure messages
Test the promotion boundary, excluded item, expiry and combination rule against approved terms in a sandbox. Compare displayed discount, final amount and order state while retaining the original cart. Clear error copy helps only when the configured eligibility and calculation are themselves correct for the selected products.
Worked example — illustrative data.
| Synthetic case | Expected result | Message specimen |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible item and valid code | Approved discount applies once | Discount shown with updated total |
| Expired code | No discount; cart retained | This code is no longer valid |
| Excluded item | Rule explained without false promise | This code does not apply to this item |
| Minimum not reached | Approved threshold explained | Check the promotion’s stated minimum |
| Two incompatible codes | Supported combination rule | These offers cannot be combined, if confirmed |
Obtain owner-approved promotion terms and the platform configuration before writing error copy. Test boundaries with synthetic products, including the threshold amount and a mixed eligible/ineligible cart. Check tax, shipping and refund behavior where the actual offer changes them. Keep the original cart intact after an invalid code. Record the code state, displayed amount and final order state so a misleading success message can be distinguished from a pricing failure.
Test the threshold on both sides of the rule
Use the approved promotion terms to choose a cart just below the eligibility threshold, one at it and one above it. Then change quantity or remove an eligible item after applying the code. Record the current subtotal basis, discount and payable amount at every step. The error message should explain the actual unmet rule without erasing the shopper’s remaining valid selections.
Cart changes can invalidate an earlier discount
A discount can appear to apply before a later product or shipping change invalidates it. Re-evaluate the rule and explain the current state rather than letting a stale total survive into payment.
Fix mismatched rules or amounts before experimenting with the position of the code field. This worksheet creates no real promotion or price commitment.
Should an invalid code clear the whole cart?
Preserve the valid cart and explain why the promotion could not apply. A code error should not force the customer to recreate unrelated choices. Confirm the final amount against the approved rule before treating the message as correct.
