Why the answer and its sources can differ
Different search modes can use different models, retrieval steps and supporting pages. Google describes these differences between AI Overviews and AI Mode. Changing the question, language or conversation context also changes what you are comparing. Even when visible conditions look matched, a different answer does not reveal which underlying mechanism changed. Treat model, retrieval and context differences as possible explanations to investigate, not causes established by one pair of answers.
Compare repeated answers under the same conditions
Repeat the same documented question and compare wording, sources and factual accuracy before interpreting a change. Keep a changed market or surface in a separate comparison. The table explains how observations differ; it does not convert recommendation order into a stable rank or establish that a website edit caused movement.
Worked example — illustrative data.
| Run | Illustrative difference | Interpretation to retain |
|---|---|---|
| A: context recorded | Brand named; source X cited | One observed answer |
| B: same prompt, fresh conversation | Brand omitted; source Y cited | Variation, not proven loss of position |
| C: market changed | Different local businesses appear | Context changed; compare separately |
Keep exact prompt wording, date, surface, language, market and account context in the working sheet. Save the complete answer, not just a screenshot cropped to a favorable mention. Separate a change in factual accuracy from a change in recommendation order. Repeat enough to understand variability within the chosen sample, and declare the sample boundary. If the product or surface changes during the period, annotate that change rather than smoothing it away.
Keep a matched panel when the product changes
If the model label or search mode changes halfway through a check, retain the earlier captures and begin a separate comparison series. In the illustrative table, A and B are separate runs of the same recorded prompt. Repeat that exact prompt in fresh conversations under each available condition before discussing a difference. Write down which condition changed and which remained unknown. A comparison across unmatched modes cannot isolate answer variation from the mode change.
An absent answer feature differs from an answer omitting the brand
A surface may not display an answer or citation for a particular run. Log that state explicitly. A missing feature is not the same observation as a displayed answer that excludes the brand.
Investigate persistent factual errors or missing buyer information across the sample. Avoid reacting to every isolated mention change with a new page or a claim that optimization succeeded.
Should I replace a bad answer with a better rerun?
Keep both attempts. A rerun is another observation with its own timestamp and conditions. Replacing only unfavorable answers changes the sample after collection and hides the variation the exercise is meant to explain.
